Tour Description
Experience the tranquility of pristine Australian rainforest and the serenity of Russell Falls at Mt Field National Park
Travel north west from Hobart, skirting Mt Wellington and follow the Derwent River, along the way learning some of the history of Hobart and the surrounding towns and villages. Pass though the beautiful Derwent Valley, New Norfolk and the Hop and Cherry Fields on the way to the Salmon Ponds the oldest trout hatchery in the Southern Hemisphere, in operation since 1864. The Salmon Ponds feature over 50 species of trees from though out the world as well as the Museum of Trout fishing and Tasmanian Angling Hall of Fame set amidst the historic buildings, hatchery and fish ponds, within the original English parkland of superb trees, hedges and lawns. After a delightful complimentary morning tea of cake and tea/coffee take the opportunity to feed the fish or walk along the banks of the Plenty River. Learn about the events that make up Tasmania's rich angling history and the significant contribution to Tasmania's world renowned trout fishery.
At Mt Field National Park witness the amazing multi tiered Russell Falls. The path to the falls is accessible to all fitness levels and along the way marvel at the massive tree ferns, swamp gums and colourful fungis along the path as it follows the creek to Russell Falls. Return from Russell falls via the same paved path or take the circuit path and maybe spot some of the local wildlife. before heading back to Hobart stop for lunch in the cafe (own cost) or spend a little longer in at the falls.
Return to Hobart on the opposite bank of the Derwent River where in season we may stop to purchase local fruit and berries.
